Me again. I’ve had an intermittent problem that won’t go away. The car is generally running really well now with only one problem left (for now). When approaching a stop and letting off the accelerator, the revs will drop almost to nothing and the engine nearly stalls. Sometimes it does stall.
ie approach a junction, brake, clutch, revs fall, engine stalls.
Previously it’s been diagnosed as a vacuum hose loose/disconnected. But now it’s still happening and seems to be sometimes intermittent.
Is this likely to be vacuum hose related? If so is there any way I can test/check the pipes for leaks?!
Sounds like a rev limiter, has the rotor arm got a spring on it?
I’m not sure about the spring. To be honest it doesn’t feel like a rev limiter, more like a real problem. Sometimes it doesn’t happen quite the same way; and if I’m brave I can get past the first cough at least!
Hi. My 1991 16V GTi has recently had service, timing, new plugs, HT leads, and a good check over, and I was hoping it would cure a problem - but hasn't. It drives through the range rev pretty solid but when I hit around 5000 rpm it really has a fit. At best its a hiccup, at worst it almost starts bouncing.
Any ideas what I should be looking at next?
PS it also sometimes almost stalls when the revs drop when coming to a stop. ie braking at a roundabout, sometimes revs will just drop too low and it will stall.
Hi. I'm new to this and not especially mechanically minded. Can anyone help with a question on starting my car.
When I first start the car from cold, it seems to almost shudder into a start. Sometimes it takes a second attempt. It's never not started but it seems almost like it won't! Then when its running, and cold still, I will try to rev it a little and it will almost stall, splutter a little, and then pick up revs. I notice there's a little white smoke too.
Once its warmed up and I'm driving away, it seems to disappear and behave quite normal. No smoke, no delay in acceleration etc.
Any thoughts on what this might point to?
It's a 1991 16v GTi, in original working order. Maybe a bit of an oil leak although it could be old oil in the bay rather than new. The oil looks good and clean, but the coolant looks lumpy and cloudy which I wonder if it needs a good flush.
