Mk2 Golf Chat / MK2 golf 1.3, 1989 5 speed gearbox oil check
I need some help!

Whilst in my sons golf the other day, i heard what i thought was a knackered wheel bearing, rumbling sound. Couldn't tell weather it was front or back but it was passenger side. He has gone on holiday, so i got it in the work shop and jacked the passenger side up, and spun the wheels. Both didn't seem noisy. As we replaced the rears a few months ago, i decided to replace the front one to rule it out. Whilst on the stands, i wanted to check the gearbox oil, as there is a slim chance its that? Every where i googled this, it talks about a drain plug at the bottom and a refill plug just above and to the right, on the side. I don't have the refill plug. i have the drain plug but cant see any plug on the side anywhere. And the gear box has recently been Gunk cleaned, so i haven't missed it. I must have a different gearbox? This is definitely the original box as it was a 2 owner barn find with £70k miles on clock. Any body got any idea what box is in it,  how i check the oil and how i refill it?

Thanks

Mk2 Golf Chat / engine carrier frame replacemnet
So whilst replacing the front control arms yesterday, i had a mare of a job. The front bush bolt snapped off and i had to cut off the old arm and the remaining bolt and spend hours drilling out and trying to recut a tread into the old hole. Whilst doing this i noticed the sub frame / carrier is quite rotten in places and as mine is a barn find, i think its the original control arm so been in there 35 years.
I did'nt  attempt  the other side control arm, given the hassle and swearing!

As i've replaced everything else, i think its a good time to put a new carrier frame in. Question is, can i do this whilst leaving the engine and steering rack etc in place? from the looks of it i can undo everything, hold the engine in place with engine hoist and drop the sub frame away from underneath. then replace the engine mounts etc and put the new one back up from underneath and then attach the control arms.

Anybody know if this will work?

Also are the carriers / sub frames the same for all engine models of the same year or do they change? mines a 1.3.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Mk 2 cup holder in middle air vent
Hi anybody know where i can get the 3d printed parts for the MK 2 middle air vent cup holder conversion? I bought a spare middle vent from breakers, so i can return to standard if i want and bought the wildly used slim cup holder from FORD GALAXY MK2 INTERIOR CUP HOLDER 2000-2006,  as used in later VW's and others but struggling to find anywhere to buy the locating collar, (rectangle shape), and front grill that has been used on various Youtube vids of this conversion.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Mk 2 1.3 golf 1988 front brake dust covers
191 615 312 B this part number in google, brings up pictures of full guards and the 1/3 guards? Is there nowhere where you can put chassis number in for old vw stuff and it comes up with correct part?

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Mk 2 1.3 golf 1988 front brake dust covers
Hi all, yes mine look like the image 4 on this link https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/golf/go/1991-110/6/615-117000/#4 Not like either of the 2 images on this post which are both too small, ie 1/3 of the round. mine are 3/4 of the round. The other problem is, 1988 is change over year, so its unclear so far the correct part numbers. so the picture looks right on this link, but when you take the part number and add it to google, it comes up with the shields like the above pictures? Not getting very far!

Mk2 Golf Chat / Mk 2 1.3 golf 1988 front brake dust covers
Hi All, new to this forum. I recently bought a 1988 MK2 golf, barn find, completely original, and it fantastic nic, having only had 2 owners, done £75k miles and not been used for the last 15 years, stored in a garage. Its only a 1.3, but i love her. Soo much fun to drive. The only things to be showing bad corrosion are the suspension components. the actual body shell is amazing hardly any rust anywhere.

So i completely renewed the rear bean the other week, found a used beam on ebay, had it shot blasted and coated and renewed the back brakes, all relatively cheap to buy i thought. All went well, so now i'm going to do the front. I've bought the control arms, ones with the larger ball joints which i hope is correct as its change over year.

I'm a bit hesitant though as i bought the front disc brake dust covers from same place and they are wrong. they sent the 1/3 type covers, and on inspection, mine are 3/4 type ones, going all the way around the disc, apart from caliper slot. I cant seem to find online, anywhere that gives me the correct parts? does anybody know the part numbers of the 3/4 disc covers or where i can buy a set of new or good S/H to be blasted and coated? Mine are not vented discs by the way.

Any help much appricated
