Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Mk2 golf value
IMHO a well done 1.8T conversion will cost you more than the car will be worth if you try to sell it. As others have said the better general condition and more standard it is the higher the potential value, but if it's not a GTi or in very good nick it probably won't make you rich.

Depends what you're trying to do but if it's in alright condition I'd say get it valeted / cleaned up and advertise it for an optimistic value and see what happens. You never know!

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Historic Vehicle classification
I have an 81 classic mini that I managed to get classified as 'historic' last year. Engine swap seems to be a kind of grey area based on what I could find on the DVLA website.

My mini was originally a 998 but now has a 1275 in it from a metro - not exactly 'original equipment' but close enough. The swap is declared and changed on the v5. To apply for the historical status I went to the local Post Office and was shocked at how quick and easy the process was. It may depend on who is at the counter when you go, but it took less than 5 minutes and I left with a receipt for £0 for tax, and got a new v5 in the post a week or so later. The person at the Post Office didn't ask a single question about the car, she just looked at the v5 and presumably just checked the date.

I also have an early 84 mk2 golf (registered 9th March 1984) so will be trying to register it as historical on 1st April next year. It is mostly standard aside from minor changes / upgrades over the years.

Afaik cars registered after 1st April 1984 will have to wait until 2025 based on DVLA's rules.

I imagine you could argue the point over an engine swap given that mk2 engines probably aren't available off the shelf any more but trying it with a 1.8T swap might be pushing your luck.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: VW garage in Bradford.
Might be worth checking out Valley Dubs in Sowerby Bridge too - not Bradford but not far off and sounds like they know what they're doing. Haven't had anything done by them myself though

Members' Cars / Re: A342LFX - just picked this early GL Auto
Update - just had a long chat with Paul on the phone and can confirm he is indeed a lovely chap. Got plenty of info and apparently there used to be a big folder of paperwork with the car, so sadly lost in the past year or so  :o

Thanks again @Eddypeck for the heads up

Thanks for the response and interesting to hear! Finding an OEM interior is going to be near impossible - I originally thought it would have been brown but thinking actually black / grey (from looking at 1984 sales brochure)

Is Paul still on here at all?

Thanks again

Members' Cars / A342LFX - just picked up this early GL Auto
Seems to be very early ( 09 March 1984) and has a forum sticker on it. Anybody here used to own it / know any history? Seems to have been in Bristol / SW at some point in it's earlier life.

Photos here

It's got lots of wrong parts and small jobs to sort but seems reasonably solid. Planning on running it as a rolling resto this year and nudging it back towards OEM.

Cheers
