Mk2 Golf Chat / MOT Front Brake Pipe Clips Advisory
Hi there,

I have a 1991 mk2 golf gti 16v. The MOT states offside and near side Front Brake pipe clips or supports missing, pipe adequately supported at caliper.

Can anyone advise on where these clips would go and where I can buy them.

Many thanks,
Sam

I.C.E & Electrical / Mk2 GTI 16V Alternator Size
Hi I have a Mk2 gti 16v and have bought myself a new uprated 90Amp alternator for it, however the pulley shaft isn’t long enough and the belt doesn’t reach so I have returned it. I have been struggling to find one that is 90Amps with the lengthened pulley. Can anyone help recommend a decent 90Amp one with the correct shaft length?

I have attached a picture of the original alt and the new one that I bought.

Suspension & Steering / Loud clunk when accelerating and braking
Hi there, I have a GTI 16V and it has developed a new problem where I get a loud clunk from the front of the car when accelerating and braking.

It first happened when I was on a small road driving fast and did some heavy braking before a corner, as I pressed the pedal a very loud clunk came from the front, it seemed more from the right at first and I felt it through the brake pedal. I kept driving it around and it only did it when I was braking heavily. Unfortunately on my way home my alternator and waterpump belt snapped so I had to get a tow home. While I was fitting the belt I looked for sliding pads and gave everything  a wiggle and it all seemed fine. Next day it was worse and I could feel it clunk back into place when accelerating hard, and then back again when braking.

Put it up on a lift this morning, wheels were under torqued and not on tightly so tightened them all up and went out for a drive and it had stopped, however I went to do a 3 point turn and as I reached full left lock it made a clunk, and it is now again clunking with braking and accelerating. Checked the bolts again and they seem fine.

Would anyone happen to know the problem?

Many thanks

I.C.E & Electrical / Re: Identify connector in boot
I’m not at the car at the moment but I ever seeing pipes around the connector area, it has remote CL with a new controller/antenna box under the dash by the steering column so it must be all electric now.

I.C.E & Electrical / Identify connector in boot
Hi there,

I have found a 3 pin connector on the left side of the boot below the rear lights. It has a white/red wire going to it, a brown wire which goes to earth on the left side of the boot and a yellow/red wire. Would anybody happen to know what it is and what it’s for. I have looked on the wiring schematics and can’t find anything, I have attached a link to the picture of it.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Upgrade Speakers and Headunit
Thanks for the help everyone,

The old unit simply slid out without any latching mechanism, so not an issue. Upon taking off the door speaker panels I found that the connection to the driver door was loose which was why I could only hear out of the tweeter and it sounded awful. Both front speakers are actually already upgraded unknown to me, they are Edge 210W units.

However the speakers in the boot are the original and are unconnected for some reason, I have ordered some JBL replacements which I should sound good. Weirdly though the wires for those speakers had no connectors on and were just stripped.

I cant help with your speaker selection but the special tool you mention is probably 2 pieces of u shaped wire which fit into 2 holes on each side of the radio face most radios come with this tool if not somewhere like Halfords sell them. You might be lucky and the previous radio was fitted with an adaptor plug and cable if not you will need to work out what wire does what.

Ok, will look tomorrow thanks.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Upgrade Speakers and Headunit
Hi all,

I bought a 1991 Mk2 Golf GTi 16V back in April and have been having great fun with it, I've had a few problems but all fixable. Since I got the car the speakers haven't worked properly, it doesn't have the original head unit. I am going to upgrade the head unit to a Sony MEX-N7300DB, however I am yet to pull out the current one to see how much of a headache plugging it all in will be. I have heard you need a special tool to do this, is this correct?

The current speakers in the car are completely blown I think and only the passenger front door one works, I am looking to change them all and have found an Alpine kit which has the correct speakers for the doors and dash. I have linked this below, will this all work and has anyone got or used these speakers?
