Other Problems / Re: Fuel leak from pump area
Thanks for all the help so far. Managed to drop the pump and replace the hose but it wasn't the easy fix I'd hoped for. The leak actually appears to be coming from the flange where the two return pipes leave the reservoir. As the prices being asked for replacement reservoirs, either new pattern parts or second hand ones (which might have the same problem...) aren't cheap, I'm wondering if it's possible to use some sort of petrol-resistant sealant/epoxy or similar on the part. Anyone tried this and if so does it work?

Other Problems / Re: Fuel leak from pump area
Thanks for your help, I've now succeeded in getting the pump assembly off the studs and I reckon I'll be able to re-use the rubber bushes, though they may need a little persuading to go back on. And the leak does look like it's coming from the hose connection rather than the pump itself (though looking anxiously at the flange where the hose connections come in...) Next problem is getting the little hose clips off. Bought a "proper" tool for the job though whether it's due to my previous attempts at undoing them or the fact that due to the position of everything it's almost impossible to exert any force on it the clips still don't want to come off. Will try again tomorrow...

New Members Say Hi! / Another new member
Hi, all
My name's Mike and I have a 1988 (or technically '87) Gold GTGI 16V. I say "technically" because that's when it was built but it wasn't registered until '88 because it was one of the cars on the quayside when the "hurricane" of 1987 came over and deposited tons of sand, shale etc etc on top of them. As you probably know, the cars were recovered and sent to the dealer network for refurbishment and resale. (I'm sure it was a bit more complicated than that...) and mine ended up with a garage near Evesham, from where I bought it, nicely repaired and at a good discount, with 24 miles on the clock in September 1988. It was my regular drive until six years or so ago when difficulty in getting parts and service (my local VW main dealer was doing more harm than good...) led me to get a newer car for the donkey work and keep the Golf for high days and holidays, also to rectify some of the issues that 30 years inevitably cause.
Two years ago it failed its MOT on a few relatively minor points; none of the local garages wanted to know so I decided it was time to put it on a SORN, bone up on the mechanics and get my hands dirty. As I said, that was two years ago. One of the problems I fixed fairly easily (though I haven't been able to road test it) but I stalled at the second; as is often the case the car got pushed into the garage and, not exactly forgotten but.. I'm now determined to get the thing back on the road and have posted a query elsewhere on this site. Wish me luck!

Other Problems / Fuel leak from pump area
Hi
Mt 1988 Golf GTI 16V has a fuel leak from the area of the fuel pump. It appears to be coming from above the reservoir so I think / hope the leak is from the pipe connections rather than the pump or reservoir itself. All the manuals and videos say to undo the four bolts holding the mounting bracket and drop the unit complete. I've undone the bolts and the thing won't budge. Am I missing something or do I just need to use a bit more force, or is there a technique?
