Interior, Upholstery & Trim / Carpet and door seal trim
Last post by Gazpacholulu -
Usual problem of swimming pool in the footwell. Not the usual door card problem but it looks af if the door aperture seal has finally given up. Came to replace it and there is a plastic trim, with one screw, that covers the seal and carpet at the bottom of the door aperture. Removed the screw and the trim appears fixed. Not wanting to force it, I looked up the parts lists diagrams but could not find this part on any of them. Just wondered if there is a knack to there removal or is it just brute force and ignorance?

Hello all. I have an '88 Tour that has been passed through the family. Still looks and runs pretty well with just a few mods: webber carb and disc brakes come to mind.

Wheels, Brakes & Tyres / 15x7.5 ET35 with 205/50 too wide?
Last post by Nobo -
Hey guys! I did some research and from what I've gathered even 15x7 ET35 might cause rubbing (ofc largely dependent on ride height).

For those who have messed around a bit, would you say 15x7.5 ET35 and lowered 30-40mm cause rubbing or any kind of interference on bumps or harsh road? What would you personally recommend? I would prefer to not have to cut or hammer the **** out of my wheel arches.

Thanks in advance!

New Members Say Hi! / Need help choosing tires.
Last post by Russell WARD -
I have a dilemma: I need to decide which tires to use for an upcoming trip.
I have two sets of wheels/tires for my Golf — one with General Grabber AT3s and the other with Pirelli Scorpion Verde.
The AT3s are currently on the car. They’ve performed really well; most of my driving is on country roads and light trails, and they handle snow and mud surprisingly well.
However, I’ve never driven them more than 50 miles on the highway. I’ve read they’re not ideal on ice or for braking on wet roads. How safe would they be for a long winter highway drive?
There’s so much mud here right now that it wouldn’t make sense to change them until the trip begins. I usually put the Scorpions on for long highway trips, but only in summer.
The AT3s are clearly better for twisting country roads and snowy conditions, but for a 600-mile (≈960 km) high-speed trip, would it be wiser to use the Scorpions?

Hi,  I am a new member.  Can anyone help me find a garage/person in/near Swindon, Wiltshire that can help me with a complete inner and outer refurbishment/restoration of my 1989 8V Mk2 Golf.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Steering Not Returning to Centre
Last post by Andy.D -
Evening everyone,

I've finally solved the issue so thought I'd post to complete the thread (nothing more annoying than reading through a massive thread to find no resolution) and it can hopefully help someone else in the future.

I've swapped the MK2 top mount set up for a MK3 one, new mounts/spring plates/bearings/retaining nuts, and this has done the trick. Not 100% sure what part of the old set up was the culprit,  my guess is the bearing and the naff retaining nut design, but I'm happy the issue is solved.

I'm personally half way through this topic myself. I'm £300 in to my carb on the Jetta. we have all been aware for years the peirburg is trouble. How ever after chatting with a couple of different mechanics. One that worked a lot on these carbs while working at a karmann restoration place "thou not strictly just them". Well he reassured me that getting a full rebuild kit, ultra sonic cleaner on the parts. it would be fine an working like new. That was true for all of 5 mins really. I've been back and forth a few times having it adjusted, as the idle and auto choke just love doing there own thing after a couple of hundred miles.

Talking again in recent times with him, Has now said if it plays up again just chuck a webber at it, or start the whole process again this time paying for the complete service to be carried out. Which after investing over half the value of a new webber. well you can guess its a bitter pill to swallow.

So long story short. I knew them carbs was a pain, we all know there a pain. I'm 300 deep on the carb now. Meaning the actual end bill, will now be £1000 if I act now. How ever I don't do mega miles, MOT in October, I may just wait

But I must add. I'm not a professional, I may of not cleaned the carb enough, I may of not done the carb rebuild correctly. There for I may well be the cause of the issues afterward the event "thou identical still". My story certainly is not the same as both mechanics claimed, as they both said a rebuild, ultra sonic clean, will cure it

But needless to say, I'm not investing any more money or time on the pierburg

Has your jetta got the 1.3 engine or a 1.6/1.8l?
