My mum's beloved '88 GTI broke down just before lockdown - I'm a 90s kid so she has had the car longer than me! I've agreed to take over and get it back on the road.
We have a great mechanic who has looked after us for 10 years or so, so I'm not going to do the work but do need to source all the parts (just waiting for an up to date list from him).
Helpful tips greatly received... I'm not totally clueless as I own a T2 split screen. However I got it as a very ropey shell and have always prioritised it actually running (rather than restoring to original) as I use it for work! The MK2 is a totally different story though.
I want to use all original parts if I can but also get it finished ASAP - am I totally delusional? It looks like there's quite a few GTIs being broken down for parts which is sad but hopefully helpful(?)
Cars being broken are certainly a help, as, despite the popularity of the Mk2, some parts are surprisingly difficult to come across. Look up Matt at Mk2 spares also, he can usually see you right.
Good luck!
Welcome and the best of luck with the restoration. lots of parts are remanufactured but not all. second hand parts are available some "uncommon" and expensive. Remember these cars have not been made since the 1990's.
There are a couple of very good breakers kicking about, Mk2 Spares is a favourite on here.
You can also still get a whole host of parts for them now, a few years ago I completely restored an 8v gti and managed to source nearly everything on Autodoc, they still sell oem parts from Bosch/Valeo etc.
