No pressure then... hope it works!

I found some mild heat makes it easier to work with, mould around contours and stick better.

Better late than never.
So the aircon install is parked pending pipework being installed. I'll update that post.
This week the electrical goodies are being wired-up.
The heated seat loom, heated windscreen and heated door mirrors....all in time for summer!
After some pratting about I also have the removable towbar fitted. Unfortunately it isn't as descrete as I'd have liked but the socket is tucked-away. I have a pop top accessory to hitch-up to it that I'm looking forward to trying out :)

So today I removed the left parcel shelf support since the parcel shelf "hinge" had broken off. The replacement was missing one of the speaker location studs so I cut one off the old and stuck it on. All the foam has disintegrated not sure what to replace it with.
I also removed the passenger seat to install the heated seat element pads (drivers seat done last year). What an awful job that is. The thin layer of sponge behind the fabric has disintegrated into a sticky orange mess. I used the hosepipe on jet to rinse off most of it followed by a bucket wash and a good hosepipe rinse.
I also hosed down the seat foam too. Its amazing how much cleaner the foam looks now. Hopefully the weather will stay warm and I'll get it back together in a couple of days. I also need to search out the new plastic seat locators I bought a while ago. That should stop the seats rattling.

Today I had an lunchbreak visit to a local engine builder in Sheffield to check the big end /main bearings for the Caddy. All fine even though I've been stupid and allowed them to acquire some scratches.
Got a strong whiff of petrol just as I arrived and realised the issue was down to Golfy!
The fuel pipe to the injectors had been chaffing on the cambelt cover clip.
Luckily Asda was next door and a wrap of duck tape saved the day along with a tie wrap.
Now need to buy a replacement.
Turned out to be rather a long lunchbreak!

If it is the pipes I'm thinking of Duck Tape won't hold it for long.  Feed and return at the fuel rail?  There is a fair amount of pressure in the feed and petrol will break down the adhesive.  The pipes are quite expensive if you go for genuine.

Agreed. It was a JFDI fix so I could get back and get some paid work done.
Need to source a proper replacement.

So here's the latest dash pic, I didn't take it from the back seat because it's covered in aircon pipe/hose pending me spending £200 on custom hoses. I guess that isn't too much unless you are a tight Yorkshireman like me ! and the front seat and footwell as always contain the "work-in-progress" tat.

The electrical goodness wiring has been completed however I need to add a wire so that the top/front windscreen switch lights up with the others.
The windscreen is on a 12min timer and our local VAG electronics guru Chris Belman sorted it. I did the easy bit and made the switch a momentary one by removing the internal switch dimple and installing a spring from an old pen...Oh so hi-tech...And it works. Chris proved it with his heat sensing gun.

Another finishing touch would be a white L & R for the heated seat switch. Not sure if durable transfers are available ?

Looking forward to having a smug look on my face this winter!

Is that a ‘naked’ throttle pedal I see?
You’ll certainly get warmed up this winter getting new rubber over cold metal peddle lol.

Never seen a rubber on a GTI ACC pedal?

Hi Damien.
You right. No listing for this part (even VW Heritage don’t offer them). I believe they appeared on Mk1 and some Mk3?
Cunning plan by German engineers to get 0-60 time down?

I fitted the replacement bonnet catch spring in 10mins. This last week I also got the Golf tracking done. I was hoping that they would have done the camber too but the request must have gotten lost. They ordered new track rod ends and steering rods since they were initially unable to undo the old ones. I took it back and after they received the wrong parts they managed to get the original set-up adjusted. The bump-steer is much reduced.
This weekend I took the Golf over the little hill called the Pennines to Macclesfield, a nice country drive with the addition of storm debris...where did those (3) Christmas trees come from! The car performed faultlessly but I do wonder if a higher ratio gearbox might make for better touring, maybe it's an age thing? I note there is a free 1.6 engine and gearbox on Club GTI. I know fitting the higher ratio 4+E 5th gear was a popular conversion in the past. Has anyone else found a gearbox with better ratios?

Unless you are planning to mod the engine I would leave the gear ratios standard. VW did a good job of maximising acceleration from very little power. The down side is that it is busy at motorway speeds.

Back in the late 90s I had a GTI Engineering early 8v on K-jet, it was an amazing great car but I blew the innards through gearbox housing twice. Both at over a tonne on the Motorway  :-X . Anyway, I ended up buying a Scirocco off a mate, it was pretty good nick he'd just had a drunk cyclist ride out in front of him and damage the bonnet. Apparently, it was a limited edition colour, a light metallic green and must have been at a point when the car was at its lowest value so was written off due to the cost of the paint colour. I bought it for £200 just for the gearbox, robbed a few extra bits and sold on the rest to Scrap  :o .

Anyway, I think it was a GL which would suggest it was a 4+E. I wish I'd taken more notice at the time. The pairing was perfect. Obviously, this wasn't a stock engine, but it still accelerated very well, it was super nippy around town, it was great on a motorway run, decent economy if I wanted it, but would still pull at speeds over 70 and had a top speed of 139  8)

This is the car that helped me gain the 6-month driving ban  :-*

A little more fettling last weekend.
After a recent trip out in the Peak District darkness I realised how poor the headlights were. Like "four candles". (the older gen may remember the Two Ronnies sketch 😅)
So I fitted the headlamp wiring upgrade kit. Wow what a difference. The beam spread isn't as wide as the Octy but the headlights lit up the road much better and on full beam they shone far into the distance. The new street signs we have were dazzling me.
Things are looking up. The evenings are getting noticeably lighter Yay.
