Re: 8v & 16v Reply #15 – May 31, 2020, 09:30:00 PM 02/06/2017Maiden voyage; 360miles to santa podNeeds another exhaust asap; straight through pipe and scorpion backbox that came with the engine was a killerGot stopped by the cops about 10 miles from the border as it pinged up last mot expired 2013. Guys were sound, but lucky i had the screen shot i posted yesterday :lol no:Arrived home safe and sound! Car performed perfectly over the 740 miles, apart from a small leak out of a rust hole on the gearbox end cap, she retained all her fluids and required no top up. Supposed 39mpg on the mfa but i'll take that with a pinch of salt! Lol
Re: 8v & 16v Reply #16 – May 31, 2020, 09:38:16 PM 16/06/2017Nearly 1000miles covered in 2 weeks This pic was taken as we drove in to classic ford. Its making me think the subframe and wishbones i fitted that came with the engine might be mk3 items as there appears to be quite a bit of tuck at the rear and none at the front. Any way i can confirm either way?21/06/2017 I jumped the gun a bit with the 1000miles in two weeks, clicked over last night on way to work.Hopefully fit oem style exhaust and gearbox end cap later today or tomorrow. Gave it a wee clean. Amazing what sins wax and back to black can distract the eye from!(My street is on a hill)22/06/2017Gearbox end cap and exhaust fitted today. What a transformation! Car sounds fit and healthy, not getting folk turning round to look as i approach and can take the car out when i am early shift now lolHere is the one i bought;http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292159664246Great fit, great oem sound and a 2 year warranty. Cant say fairer than that for 80 bucks delivered to your door! :thumbs:30/06/2017Well all my pics are locked and photobucket want $399.99
Re: 8v & 16v Reply #17 – May 31, 2020, 09:56:20 PM 29/08/2017Well since photobucket has killed my thread there actually hasn't been much to report. Car has been my daily driver on and off since my tdi decided to kill its gearbox at the end of july, and has done herself proud. Strange having the most reliable car in the fleet being a 29 year old mk2! Raised the car up in order to get the tracking done before going to retrorides gathering, 3 coils moved no bother but of course one put up a hell of a fight as expected! Car drives so much better now, actually takes a corner and is a lot comfier now its not scraping off the tarmacManaged the journey from glasgow to Shelsley Walsh for the gathering and home almost without fault. After 664 faultless miles, I stopped to drop my mate off then she wouldn't start. Had to bump start by pushing the F plate mk2 down a fairly post Street at midnight; i am sure the curtains were twitching  Turns out alternator isn't charging, so collected a new regulator today (valeo unit so one i had spare didnt fit) and hopefully back on the road again tomorrowWill try fix the thread when i get a chance at somepoint soon07/06/2018Still not got round to fixing the photos.8v through its test, had to borrow the wheels from the 16v, and a front strut!Been using it daily on and off in the good weather, it's great when it stops raining for a bit up here!Sent from my SM-G950F using TapatalkJust noticed the photos show if using tapatalk [emoji848]02/02/2019Dry roads up here today so had the mk2 out for a spin. Definitely needs a wee electrical service and a good detail. The starter i fitted from the old engine to replace the one that came with the engine after it started to stick is now sticking. Planning on getting one of them recond. Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk28/02/2019So with the weather playing ball for a change up here, and with a well needed day off, i advised the mrs that no matter what, i am cleaning the mk2.....Poor car was filthy, faded and in need of a few hours elbow grease. Plastics haven't been treated yet, going to try heat gun them this time [emoji1696]My Meguiars wax let me down on Monday when cleaning the vr6, looked like i had used butter on it [emoji31] so used an Autoglym set my father in law gave me. Super Resin polish worked okay, as did the sealant but i need fresh wax asapSent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk
Re: 8v & 16v Reply #18 – May 31, 2020, 09:57:38 PM 19/05/2019Not long back from retrorides weekender in the 8v.Not a single issue apart from the horn doing its own thing during the last leg of the journey. Fuse out lolSent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk21/02/2019Thanks guys, it has been slightly neglected of late, bought a nova to put back on the road and a vr6 mk3.But in prep for the retrorides trip the golf received 4 toyo proxes tr-1's which i can rate highly after testing them this weekend, new lift pump, coil, +ve battery cable, coolant change, oil pressure sensor, fuel pressure regulator, plugs, distributor, rotor arm, timing, fan and power steering belts, cv boot and window regulator. That better keep her happy lolPut the lower grill and chin spoiler on before the trip tooSent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk
Re: 8v & 16v Reply #19 – May 31, 2020, 10:07:34 PM 01/11/2019; WORK ON THE 16V BEGINS.On Monday this week i received a call from my mechanic mate, not unusual for him to call being one of my best mates, but he called to say that the bodyshop chap in his work was looking for something to do over the winter evenings, and my pal had suggested welding up my 16v.....So after 3 years off the road, she left mine last night to go for some life saving surgery! Up top she looks good, underneath not so much.Repairs will be started from the rear forward, so vw heritage were happy to relieve me of £200+ for the relevant panels lol More updates to come hopefully .... Sent from my SM-G950F using TapatalkToday interior was removed, fuel tank dropped etc...A few areas of known concern, and a few new areas of concern but on the whole not as bad as it could have been.14/11/2019Now i have a work around for updating pics, here we go....Monday 4th of November my first box of goods from vw heritage arrived;Rear lower panel, both corners, both inner and outer arches, 2 sills, front jack point stumps and fuel filler neck mount.Work commenced at the rearHad to take wife up to Glasgow today, so took the 8v for a spin. Need to wash the salt off it tomorrow when baby takes a nap in morning16/11/2019Had to take wife up to Glasgow today, so took the 8v for a spin. Need to wash the salt off it tomorrow when baby takes a nap in morning03/12/2019Now that the bay was painted, work began on preparing the bay and the engine to go back in.Servo was stripped and painted, new grommet for vacum pipe and 22mm master cylinder fitted. New copper brake pipes made up and a Goodridge braided line kit with mk4 rear hoses. Common sense and a very heavy clutch pedal prompted a new clutch, release bearing, rod and main seal being fitted, I bought a new "finger" from gsf with the clutch but the quality was garbage and old one retained as it was in good nick. Friction plate wasn't at crisis point after 105k, and its had a fairly hard time since I have owned it! Timing belt and tensioner replaced, I did not change the pump as it is genuine, spinning freely and replaced in the last few thousand miles in my ownership.I would really like to have had the block painted while engine is out, but as my mate and his work are doing my a favour, I couldnt take the piss and slow things down even further getting that done. :-? Pic of bay with flash first!22/01/2020So with a lot of effort to post pics these days, i will continue the story.......Servo was cleaned up and given a nice layer of primer then I think Gloss black, new 22.2mm master cylinder and all new lines front to back.Radiator was replaced by me in 2011 but one of the tanks had cracked ever so slightly and weeped. So alu rad sourced, cowling painted and lacquered. Old minging parts living to fight another day!23/01/2020So a hell of a lot of cutting and welding took place23/01/2020So a hell of a lot of cutting and welding took place
