Engine rebuild

Greetings.
I'm new to the forum and hoping you can help me with my dilemma.
I have a mk2 gti 8v that I only use during the summer to go to classic car events etc. It runs quite well and it's very reliable. The problem is it's down on compression and power, it's been like this ever scince I've owned it. I've been inside the engine so know it's in need of a rebore.
With spring/summer not too far away I've decided to take the plunge and get the engine sorted.
I've spoken to a good few local independent garages and have been suprised by their response. None of then are interested in doing the work, I really wasn't expecting this.
I'm in Sevenoaks Kent and wondered if any of you know anywhere in my area that might be interested.
