Hi I'm a long term owner of a Mk 2 GTi from new. Drove it off the Alan Day forecourt on 1st August 1988.

Its now showing its age and I'm looking for advice about where to go to have the rust and repairs sorted. Mechanically sound but if I don't deal with the rot, well we all know that only goes one way. I'm not looking to mod the car just to keep it on the road, tidy and original. Any advice or suggestion welcome.

I live in Herts but also in the West Midlands so location of recommended restoration  not restricted to the south east. Is there a particular forum I should join/look at?

Hello, and welcome there are a few VW specific garages around but for bodywork I would prefer to find a quality workshop , one that won’t charge the earth … I am in Cornwall so can’t help you with anything local to you but there will be garages with a good name

Hi welcome to the forum I am in Devon so can't help with a recommendation when I needed advice I asked the garage that does my mot's. They don't do bodywork so gave me unbiased advice.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I did ask my garage and they said to look for a specialist as everyone they knew worked on new cars so would not be suitable. Also being in he South East they said find one as far north as possible as they would cheaper. Seems the Midlands is where the enthusiasts hang out in numbers. I founf Deutsche Doktors who are VW specialist but had wildly varying reviews from brilliant to don't tough with a barge pole. Helpful, not.

Hi Dene, no not my daily hence 'only' 117k on the clock and has done nothing over the last 12 months except to and from the MOT!!
I keep it tucked up in the garage over winter and with covid there's not been much in the way of opportunity to get out and about. Also it vies with a 2003 MX5 for the summer outings. Back in the day it was used as the family hack so condition of bodywork etc not brilliant but always looked after mechanically. However I love it as so pure and original, power nothing no power steering or windows etc etc and the direct feel when driving is just so different from the e;ectronic everything on cars now. My daily is a 20 plate Focus which does what it says on the tin and handles like a err ...Ford, so really rather well.  :-)

Welcome along.

Congrats on having the car such a long time! Depending on your budget, there's a garage in the south west call Resto Shack.
Their restorations are 2nd to none, look them up on facebook, there's some awesome work they've done.
