And Road Tax is crazy expensive!!! It's been on SORN since March 2020 - almost £300. Need to get out in in now and make sure I'm getting my monies worth.

Both the Golf and Skoda Octy road tax are £200+ pa so I pay monthly. It certainly removes the annual hit to the bank account for little extra expense.

Great news about the MOT. It isn't the time of the year to be doing major "fettling" on the drive.

So the weekend gave me chance for a little tinker.

First off the Speakers I got for my birthday back in the summer.

Unfortunately I discovered they were not a direct fit. The hole didn't quite line up so I had to think of my options.

The first possibly was to drill out the holes in the speaker frames a little. They were literally half a millimetre out.
But I would still have a potential issue of the tweeter height, as it pokes above the main cone quite a bit more than I expected.

So I decided to go for the second option and make a spacer.

This took me back to the 90s, when I remember constructing MDF kick plates for 6.5" component speakers for my Escort Van, along with a full install in boxed off wheel arches. Ok, so I wasn't going quite that far....

It started Friday night in my chilly (and very messy) shed, which as of last week now has lights and power  :D

And shortly after gave me two identical panels.

and after a trial fit...

I worked out I needed to countersink the fixing, and I also gave them a squirt of paint.

Pretty impressed with that.

Saturday allowed me to fit in the car, with the shelves out I was also able to peak behind the turret covers and was pleased to confirm no signs of rust around the turret on this car. I forgot to get pics though.

Very pleased with the sound, I mean they're still only little 6x4 so it's never going to be great. I don't know if going for these speakers was worth the extra cost and inconvenience that I wouldn't have had I got some direct fit 'Kickers' or other generic brand of eBay. But heyho, I have Rockford Fosgate, which combined with the Focal components set up in the front means I now have the most acceptable sound without going beyond the default installation. A small sub would be ideal but this is good enough for now.

Which lead me onto the next task, starting the clean.

The car hasn't had a proper clean in a very long time. And the storm has brought a lot of moss and crap off the roof of the house.
This is what the car was like up close:

In progress:

... and done:

I was fast loosing light, and it's far from complete. The whole car needs some serious paint correction now but at least that process has started, even if I just focus on a panel at a time I'll eventually get round the whole car.

Focal and Rockford are two of my favourite ICE (yes, I used the term ICE!) manufacturers.
I'll always get them if possible.

Nice to see the car cleaning pics, must admit, I do watch the Car Cleaning Guru on youtube, it's strangely addictive!

Now the driveway has been extended the Golf has it's own parking spot and isn't boxed in by any other cars....

Which means when a late night pop to the supermarket is required I can just go ....

I've also got round to fitting the oil pressure sender, it's a VDO sender and TIM gauge and I wasn't sure it was going to work but it seems to, I'll keep an eye on it as I'm not sure what to expect as healthy readings.

Just need to get the oil temp sorted now, but for now I have that on the MFA anyway.

... and I know they're a bit scruffy, the gauges will be coming back out for paint, also as they are straight on the visibility from the drivers position is not ideal. I've been having a play with some CAD software.

I might just have to talk nicely to someone with a 3D printer.  ;)

I'm sure I can help you there :)

Drop me a message with the STL/DWG file and I can look into printing it.
Not fired up the printer in weeks, be good to start making stuff again!

Oil temp is now connected and working. For now, I've just used the original sender so I no longer have temp on the MFA/ I tried to piggyback the connectors but it didn't work, I didn't expect it to as I'd heard that it wouldn't. The MFA is probably more useful given the current position of the gauges and limited visibility.

What would actually be more useful is upside down gauges like the classic Smiths ones!

But if I fine-tune the 3D print and ask Monkey nicely maybe one day I'll get this finished and paint the bezels too.

You may also notice the 12v USB in the lighter socket. It actually doubles as a Bluetooth FM sender. As mentioned previously my radio reception is rubbish since some fool previous owner decided to fit a 16v style roof aerial and the wing hole has been filled. So I can't get any radio, I don't own any tapes anymore - something I regret but ho-hum! so the 6 disc in the boot is my only music and sometimes it gets a bit boring and I forget to changed the discs over.

On first try it works really well, was easy to set up and is more discrete than many of them. If anyone is interested the link is here:

Although it seems to have gone up in the past few days I only paid £12 for it.

I've been using it to stream BBC sounds or Apple Music alongside Google maps on the phone, and it dips the music, but doesn't cut out all the way and announces the direction instructions. I guess that's my phone doing that bit. But it's really good. I haven't used the hands-free call bit but I suspect it'll be rubbish due to the position of the inbuilt mike and the fact it's down by my gearstick. might be better in a standard console. My phone goes into DND when driving automatically so I'm not likely to get disturbed by a phone call anyway.

have you already had someone printing your gaugepanel (see reply 170) for you ?
plus you need a set of clips for the washer wiring ?
