New seeking help please

Evening all, after a little advice (other than scrap it and get a Webber) I’m still running the 2e2 carb and am finding that the throttle leaver seems to be intermittently sticking and causing the vehicle to over rev constantly. Sometimes I have no issues at all and other times it’s non stop. If I manually push the leaver back/up the revs will drop but as soon as I let go back to over revs. I’ve lubed the leaver up and also had the accelerator cable replaced with no change in the issue. Anyone else had a similar issue and if so how was it resolved? Thanks in advance

Sorry, I have no personal experience with the carb models, I've only ever had GTIs. But from what you've described I'm wondering is there supposed to be a return spring?
