dvla shows it as untaxed and un motd since 2015.

Failed it's last MOT and at 220,964 miles that's quite a significant list.

While these are nothing much of concern:
Battery insecure (1.9.1)
Emissions not tested (7.3.a.1)
Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2)
Nearside front position lamp(s) not working (1.1.a.3b)
Nearside headlamp aim too high (1.8)
Offside front constant velocity joint gaiter insecure to the extent that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc (2.5.c.1a)
Offside front position lamp(s) not working side light (1.1.a.3b)
Offside headlamp aim too high (1.8)
Offside steering rack gaiter split (2.2.d.2d)
Nearside steering rack gaiter split (2.2.d.2d)


This lot, not so much:
Nearside front body or chassis has an inadequate repair, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings floor (6.1.b.2)
Nearside front body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings sill (6.1.b.2)
Nearside rear body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings sill (6.1.b.2)
Offside front body or chassis has an inadequate repair, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings floor (6.1.b.2)
Offside front body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings sill (6.1.b.2)
Offside rear body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings sill (6.1.b.2)

That's rot, front and back on both sides. And previously patched, but not very well by the sounds of things.

It would require serious effort to put this back on the road. And in 2016 prices weren't that high. Probably looking at £1500 to £3000 max for a good GTI.

Unfortunately, in 2016 that would have made more in parts than the value of the whole car. And at the time unlikely to have been economical to repair, unless the owner was able to weld and fabricate themselves. So it's likely it got broken for parts.

There's always a chance it's sitting in a garage somewhere waiting for someone to have the time to fix it, so fingers crossed for you.
