New shoes!!

Check out the for sale section, clearing out my Estorils and 14" Ra's

Quite possibly, if you google dubshed they have a dedicated website now.

Spring awakening!

so earlier I finally had a look at the rust bubble under the back seat. As I imagined it would, the floor gave way and left me with a hole big enough to get my thumb into.

I then decided to give the new welder a go and fired it up. Lets just say that the patch is well in there and that I need more practice.

Near enough more weld than floor.

So, theres been a bit of love hate lately. Namely, i keep finding small parts of rust here and there. Nothing terminal but annoying none the less. I've fitted a new Jetex exhaust recently. Not a full stainless, but a full aluminised system. Sounds the dogs but in changing the exhaust I found some rough underseal that when poked and prodded, it gave way to some rot.

... and then when refitting the suspension I found some more at the top of the turret.

They aren't the neatest repairs in the world but they do hold firm and are strong enough. I'm getting better with the welder though. At this stage, I think I've saved what i paid for it so from this point on I think I'm saving money by doing any jobs myself.

New zorst!!

This is what I did the underside of the Land Rover in and I've saved a few tins for the Golf as and when its needed. It's good stuff and seems to be hard wearing. Its what Ive been treating rust with and then once treated or new metal put in, sealing over the top with with the 4941 spray paint stuff. It's been good so far. The chassis cavity of the Golf has also been treated with the cavity stuff.

For anyone thats interested, do a read online for Dinitrol. Its very good and I'm impressed so far. Yes, it's worth the money. I got a set specifically for the Land Rover from Paddock Spares but it can also be bought directly from Dinitrol or from Amazon. Hopefully I'll be buying more in the Winter to do a full redo of the underside of the car. Far better than Waxoyl!

so after I shredded my space saver i figured id rather have a full size spare. That meant also changing the carpet out to give me the space. After glueing down the padding I finally got it fitted but I could really do with cleaning it.

Also spent some time removing the stickers off the rear window. Really prefer it like this in all truth, should have done it ages ago.

after that i did some looking for a nice period dealer sticker and found a gti engineering repro sticker and got it fitted this afternoon.

happiness :D

so, ive had an eventful week or two. Basically the gearbox has had a leak. It's been there for a while, nothing serious but i was starting to see more and more of an oil dribble as time went on and it turned out to be one of the cups for the driveshafts. The engine bay had a few and bits and pieces that I wanted to tidy as well so after a quick run down the country to lift an engine crane, this happened.

Its not the prettiest sight so after much cleaning aggravation and a few choice words, I began the big clean. Also found some rust which made me quite cross (for scale, thats a 1/2 10 inch extension bar) in the transmission tunnel and the end of the chassis leg.

My welding is getting better and I'm certainly getting a little faster.

New mounts were bought. Theres a wee story with the original one here, all three of the 13mm bolts that hold the mount on had snapped, leaving the support corrosion welded to the mount. Luckily, and very luckily indeed, I had a spare rear support. All painted up and fitted :D

I bought a fire blanket ages ago and thought if I was welding it would be handy, even to use as a fire break under the carpets etc. Well, as you can see here it performed its job faultlessly. One of my better buys.

cleaned and painted. I also changed the track rods, track rod ends, boots and the steering UJ boot. Trying to tidy the whole thing up. It also meant a complete flush of gearbox oil, engine coolant and power steering fluid. The subframe was all flatted back and painted in black hammerite and then dinitrol under seal. Its waxy type stuff but dries hard, its the same as the stuff i sprayed on the welds. its very good stuff. The insides of the arches also got some treatment by rubbing back, spraying with dinitrol rust treatment and the some dinitrol under seal over the top. again, no photos as i didnt get a chance. the subrame isnt as clean as id like but given the time constraint I think I got a right bit done. The gearbox is much the same, paint was basically thrown at it, I spent so long trying to clean it down by hand, as i didnt want oil everywhere, its only got one coat of paint over much of it. feels like half a job.

Health and safety? Nah mate not heard of them, they live near here?

This was the bane of my existence yesterday. After much arsing about I finally got the wiring right thanks to rubberjonny and a mate from up the road. Too many bloody wires. Basically, the starter terminals snapped off so it had to go off to the electrics specialist to be refurbished. When it came back it had an extra terminal, going from two to three, Bosch style to Valeo. The starter was a cheaper thrid party one but apparently was made to look like a Bosch in that it had two terminals. Turns out it was a Valeo type one with the Bosch fittings so it came back looking as a Valeo should. Melted my head and nearly shorted out the whole car.

Apologies for the lack of photos, normally I'd have loads but about 12 days or so ago when I pulled the engine and box out, the Land Rover (my daily) decided to not have a gearbox/transfer box, it has to go to a specialist. That meant quickly throwing the Golf together over the weekend so I was constantly on it for friday night, saturday afternoon and sunday afternoon/evening so I'd have a car to get to work in. I think I did ok considering most of those jobs are ones I've not had to do before and was learning as I went. Serious craic!

love it when wee period things turn up!

ive since moved this down into the bottom on the windscreen when its unobtrusive, using it more of a nod to GTI Engineering than as a tax disc holder. Love it though, and its period!

So had been using the Golf for daily duties for about 3 weeks whilst the Disco was having work done to it (it's been fixed and then sold, now in an A4) and had noticed a strange noise which I hadn't heard before. Sounded just like a clattery noisy rattle. Took all the belts off and gave the pulleys a tug and the water pump pulley was pretty loose and had a good millimetre or so of play. Odd thing was that there was no noticeable leak of coolant other than the odd drop. You can see that the pump is pretty rash looking.

New one in and no more odd noise. The next job is stopping the wee oil leak that has appeared from the sump, truth told its been there a while but i really don't want to drop the sump out, messy job but it will need sorted sooner than later. I imagine the Golf will be off the road this show season as my limited mileage has been reached already due to daily duties which is a pain but I have a plan for another stand in car for this years shows.

Yeehaw no more broken LCD screen!

Not had the GTI out much recently, just been washing and polishing. Due the MoT tomorrow so hopefully it goes through without issue.

I wouldn’t take much from me other than learn from my mistakes!! 🤣🤣 I’m up in Ballyclare, would be worth getting the golfs together at some stage!

The key rings came very kindly came from a member on here, I’m not sure where he got them from.
