That looks great Dave. What did you use to get the washer bottle so clean? I've disolved a dishwsher tablet in hot water and left it overnight to soak.

nice pictures :-) would you make a pic of this golf ball lever in full ?
i wonder how close the thingiverse version is.

what is this solution finish, which you use for your plastic parts ?
i used good old stinky shoe cream, got similar results, but needed a lot.

some screws i even got in stainless. for the rest of them:
is there a guide about this electrolysis thing ?

is your back side emblem missing ? i broke the pins on mine.
do you have a source ?

i guess it could be 3d-printed too,
but this would take time and i mainly use openscad
where i code parts more, than i design them..
..long story short: some parts i like more than others.
one maybe could ask the guy, who did the front side emblem.
it came out very nice and was pretty close to the original.
the inner edges maybe a notch to round.

Hi solutions finish is a black dye that you apply with a cloth it comes in a small bottle which is more than enough to coat the black plastic on the car I even put it on the tailgate trim. Most of the items you are looking for are available on ebay a lot of sellers will post abroad. The golf ball is very similar to a standard ball but is matt in colour and the dimples appear a little deeper.

@Damien.wrl yeah, it's starting to sink in, but I've still got the blue one!

@mk24ever, do you mean the standard gear knob? The STL looks very similar, but not quite there.
I believe you can still get new ones, I did buy one a few years ago, if I can find it, I'll stick that on.
I did think about stainless screws, but I've kind of got addicted to the zinc plating now!

Speaking of which, I set the kit up again this weekend and got to it with the driveshaft bolts and the exhaust hanger.

Made a fair difference to the strut tops too, I know they should be in yellow passivate, but I really like the silver.

Biggest thing I've plated yet is the bonnet catch, that worked well and went straight on the car

@monkey: @pwardy said i should not use stainless,
cause of the washers not being attached to the screws,
but since rusting screws can cause a lot of damage,
i can live with that. plus i can adapt the washer size
with my lathe, but was not necessary.

edit: i got it wrong. this is not what @pwardy said (see his edit).

if we are on it:
i dismissed frames with considerably fewer rust problems.

why are you guys putting so much effort in fixing frames ?
wouldn't it be easier to transform a cl with a good one ?

We fix them because they're all old now.
Over here, it's much harder to find good ones regardless of cl or gti, they all hide rust somewhere.
The rust that comes about isn't as easy to see on initial inspection and with the prices of them shooting up you just have to take your chances. The one I bought was completely sight unseen, they were going for so much money, when mine came up at a reasonable price, I couldn't afford to take time. I called and placed a deposit within 15 minutes of the advert going up. Apparently after that, he had 4 or 5 people call offering more than asking price for it.

at some point i would have possibly bought a gti, too,
but for bigger trips, i like my economic 55 ps mk2,
so i would not like to put more horsepower into it.

how much fuel does your gti need ?
i also wonder how it sound like, from the drivers perspective.

regarding stainless i had the screws, attaching the fenders, in mind,
but, as it appears, such should not be used with heavy loads
(see edit of my post, reply 140, above).
i'm so glad, i posted about "some screws" in reply 137.

I've actually had about 10 GTIs now, I've got an addiction to them!

I've found in both 8v and 16v GTIs, when driven normally I'll see around 6.7 l/100km.
Interestingly, my 3.2 gets similar consumption.
I love the sound of a standard GTI, my last 16v had a complete standard system on it.

Also, the arch liners would be good to have in stainless, but I had all the normal ones in good condition and they all came up really well with the zinc plating.

this is not much more than my 55ps needs.
i probably should have wanted a gti..

the 8v does not sound as sore as the 16v
and there is no crackling, true ?
how does this 6v 3.2 sound ?

Sorry Andy, missed your question. I was just lucky, all it needed was a decent rinse out and a wipe down on the outside.

@mk24ever I had a 1.6 Driver for a few years and my first 8v gti was much better on fuel.
Not sure what you mean by crackling, but the 8 and 16v do sound quite similar, perhaps the 8v is a little deeper.
The 3.2 is something else entirely though. I love the noise of it!

is the actual engine a 112 ps one ?
do you know the reason, why your previous 8v gti was better on fuel ?
how desirable are the g60 and g60 limited machines ?

regarding 16v, i watched this test drive
and there was some crackling when he throttled back. why is such ?

for engine sounds, i have now started this separate thread.

The 8v is probably good on fuel compared to a smaller engine is the injection is more efficient and the larger engine means it's not as stressed to travel at normal speeds.
G60 and G60 Limited are very desirable (especially the Limited)

That video said he's got a 421 manifold, so that's probably why it crackled a bit.

So I had a few days off last week and managed to crack into the rear beam refurb.
Started off with some brakes that looked very sorry form themselves.

But after a lot of cleaning, some paint and a couple of rebuild kits, they look much more respectable

Unfortunately, someone had forgotten to buy new flexi brake lines and slider pin boots, so the build stopped there!

So instead, I went on with the fuel tank, I've been tripping over it for a year now and had had enough.
No photos, but the pump came out and was replaced with a new pierburg unit.
Then in finally went back into the car, with the new straps.
I'm very pleased with the fit, the straps all went back on and the tank fitted exactly as it should.
Which is a relief, as we'd fitted a new neck bracket for it!!

All coming together very quickly now... it was a great motivator when the previously near bare shell suddenly started to look like a car again.

Those are two jobs that look straightforward to the viewer but are anything but, specially doing them on your own.

Did you print the plastic bungs?

Wouldn't like to meet your cat on a dark night, must be the size of a dog judging by all the empty Dreamies cartons!
