Clutch not Working - Grrrr

So today I fitted the V belt on the PAS/water pump. Managed to draw blood from a knuckle but no matter; the thought of a tootle round the block was few minutes in sight...or so I thought....
Tried to put the car in gear and I couldn't. Looked at the clutch arm and all appeared OK however the clutch isn't releasing. Thought I'd try shock treatment. Put the car in gear and started it with the clutch pedal "foot to the floor" and the car jumped. 8u99**. Clutch still not releasing! Grrrrrr. Need another pair of eyes to check what is/isn't happening.

edit:
The cable is fine and the arm is moving freely so I guess the clutch plate is stuck to the flywheel.

Release bearing?
I've seen the push rod wear down so no longer pushed the centre plate enough also seen the push rod go through the centre plate

In 1st, brakes firmly on (edit:2! Clutch pedal down) then start....
Bang.
