Golf Mk2 - 1990 LA9V

Hello all

Don't post on this forum much, tend to use a couple of others for some reason.

Thought I may aswell post abit about my Mk2… So briefly…

After some Christmas drinks in 2014 I decided I really needed my first Mk2, having always loaded them.

Bought this in January 2015 as pretty stock 16v with twin Webers.

Didn't take long to discover that Mk2's are much too slow, so opted for a 20vt engine conversion after reading hundreds of forum threads and youtube videos etc. Also liked the challenge of an engine conversion as it was my first (and only).

Just before engine was removed:

Bought a donor car in 2019:

Drove it for the 2 months remaining on the MOT and it felt like a strong engine. Removed engine/gearbox:

Bought a Trackslag 3.5” downpipe and 3” exhaust

Changed the oil pickup, timing belt, waterpump etc etc. Sent Mk2 and Mk4 looms off to be mated. And fit a lightened G60 flywheel and new VR6 clutch. Then trial fit:

It was about this time in 2020 when lockdown started to I had plenty of time to finish the conversion. Made bracket to keep shifter in position:

Finishing coolant piping:

Fitting front end and planning intercooler placement:

New TIP:

Fitting shifter with new bushes/spring

Lots of little things to tidy up completed and it looked like this last summer:

Finally ready for MOT:

I kept a spreadsheet of costs for the conversion if anyone is interested. (Also sold the 16v engine, gearbox, carbs etc and got £1600 back)

Donor car £750
Gearbox £0
Engine brackets £135
Engine mounts £40
Pedalbox £140
Clutch master/slave cylinders £85
Turbo £0
Charge pipe £115
Downpipe £200
Turbo Inlet Pipe £125
Exhaust manifold £0
Exhaust £550
Wiring loom £275
Gear shifter and cables £0
Gearbox tower £0
Short brake master cylinder and reservoir £87
Starter motor £0
VR6 Clutch £90
G60 Flywheel + lightning £100
De-immobilsing ECU £0
Air filter £0
Radiator / fans £0
Intercooler £60
Pipework £120
Injectors £0
Cambelt / Waterpump £85
Service items £100
Remap £450
Mk3 fuel tank / straps / brackets / lines £40
Mk3 fuel pump £65
Coil packs £120
Various £200

TOTAL - £3932

Could definitely be done for less - such as exhaust, a flashed ECU off ebay, loom made yourself etc

The sump sits really low, after only 200 miles I smashed a hole in it:

Booked into Badger 5 for some mapping, only running 230bhp but the car can actually put the power down. No idea how people handle 300+ bhp in a Mk2. I dare say my car would be faster than many with big power due to wheel spin.

Currently painting the rocker cover and replacing the leaking gasket. And I want to spray the inlet manifold with wrinkle paint. Also have H&R suspension and G60 brakes to fit soon.

Also bought a T5 which my girlfriend and I are turning into a campervan:
