Upgrade Speakers and Headunit

Hi all,

I bought a 1991 Mk2 Golf GTi 16V back in April and have been having great fun with it, I've had a few problems but all fixable. Since I got the car the speakers haven't worked properly, it doesn't have the original head unit. I am going to upgrade the head unit to a Sony MEX-N7300DB, however I am yet to pull out the current one to see how much of a headache plugging it all in will be. I have heard you need a special tool to do this, is this correct?

The current speakers in the car are completely blown I think and only the passenger front door one works, I am looking to change them all and have found an Alpine kit which has the correct speakers for the doors and dash. I have linked this below, will this all work and has anyone got or used these speakers?

Many thanks

I cant help with your speaker selection but the special tool you mention is probably 2 pieces of u shaped wire which fit into 2 holes on each side of the radio face most radios come with this tool if not somewhere like Halfords sell them. You might be lucky and the previous radio was fitted with an adaptor plug and cable if not you will need to work out what wire does what.

Maybe you can search ebay for the tool if you have the make/model to search for a install manual/download, or maybe remove the surround covering the locking mech and work out what is holding it.
I've got an Alpine head unit and I use a small screwdriver to raise the securing pins either side
If there are holes then a mini sized posidrive screwdriver or two and a bit of wriggling should get it out.
Good luck.

Thanks for the help everyone,

The old unit simply slid out without any latching mechanism, so not an issue. Upon taking off the door speaker panels I found that the connection to the driver door was loose which was why I could only hear out of the tweeter and it sounded awful. Both front speakers are actually already upgraded unknown to me, they are Edge 210W units.

However the speakers in the boot are the original and are unconnected for some reason, I have ordered some JBL replacements which I should sound good. Weirdly though the wires for those speakers had no connectors on and were just stripped.
