Timing belt on MK2 NA Diesel - 137 tooth?

Hi all, first post here, have a weird one with a MK2 I am trying to get back on the road.

It's a diesel non-turbo MK2 engine, the timing belt needs replacing desperately, so I have a Febi Belstein kit here and have struggled for the last four hours to try and get it to fit, now I look closer, the new belt is 135 teeth, the one that came off is 137 teeth, but I can't find reference anywhere online of a 137 tooth belt on a MK2. So I'd like to know if anyone can confirm that a 137 tooth belt is as fitted (assuming because I can't fit a 135 tooth belt it is), and if a reference/part number would be absolutely brilliant.

Not that it's strictly relevant but the new belt (that doesn't fit) has a Febi part number of 12663 (135X25) 7083.

The old one I can't make out, possibly G1240H 137HL254 but I'm having to basically make numbers up there from what I have!

I enclose pics of the two belts and the block.

I will go to the motor factors tomorrow (bank holiday today) but I'm more concerned if it has been messed about with!

Many thanks.

Jack.

Don't know the first thing about diesels and not a great deal about other engines either but I'm trying to learn.

If you don't already know about it check out - 7Zap

I also make use of the various makers on-line catalogues, most have them and they can be a mine of info. on not only their own products but quite often give the OE part number they're intended to replace.

Some even give compatible alternative makers numbers.

Here's Febi's - https://partsfinder.bilsteingroup.com/en/article/febi/12663?make=Volkswagen

The old belt seems to tally with a Goodyear part number.

Some of the auto-factor sites can also be useful - Audodoc's works for me... put in a part number and they'll do something similar.

Quick glance shows you're correct to say there's 135 and 137 toothed versions depending on diesel engine version, but again, it means nothing to me!

Hi, thank you, that's really helpful!

I wonder if the confusion lies in that it is a GTD shell but has a non-turbo engine fitted. Which was always going to be a headache.

And thank you for the heads up about the belts too, I am relieved that it has the right belt fitted to start with!

I actually ordered the belt from Autodoc and they only list the 135 tooth variant for this one, I'll see what the local factors can turn up tomorrow.

Thanks again.
